Why an apparently conventional band decides to be called with a name like Bizarre? Probably because under his silky skin they cherish very singular artistic interests. They fit in the mainstraim concept, nevertheless they sound different to any other stuff one can tune in. In Spanish the word bizarro means brave, courageous. On the other hand, bizarre means strange, odd, and even eccentric. Bizarre, the band, are a bold anomaly in the current Spanish Pop scene. They are, in one word, a delight.
Few things are harder than moving into thousand-times used parameters without losing your personality. And Bizarre have it. They write clear melodies which converge in their voices. Meri and Javier sing like being in opposite poles. She is in the North and he is in the South -or maybe backwards-, but when they meet they mix up like ice melting in water.
The former members have been exchanging musical ideas since 1999, althought the current line-up sets in 2003. They are from Blanes, the town where Costa Brava begins -or where it ends-. They used to sing in English, with the intention of joining alternative music with the most commercial.
After receiving a warm welcome from SolMúsica TV channel contest, they manage to record their definitive demo with prestigious producer Paco Loco. One year later, they win Best Band prize at 2004 Badalona's Music Contest, they play at London's Roadhouse venue, and they win the first prize at Girona's edition of Los 40 Principales demo contest.
Javier, the band's main composer, states that Bizarre is like a techno band but with drums, bass and guitar. But not a sound alloy (like their beloved Depeche Mode). In any case, a fluid transfer. Songs such as “Sé”, “Nada”, “Si me rozas”, “Difícil de entender”, “No puedes pedir” or any of the twelve songs included in their first CD (produced in Barcelona by Micky Forteza), pass between the solid architecture of bands like Coldplay, U2 or Keane and the more intimist sound wedged during the 80's by Prefab Sprout or Deacon Blue.
A curiosity: except Meri, who is a 22 years-old art designer student (and therefore the youngest member of the band), all Bizarre members have studied strictly scientific or technical degrees. Jordi is an engineer, Álex studied mathematics, Alfonso is a draughtsman and Javier studied Physics, and now he is working in R&D in the AI field. He aspires to create neural networks capable of generating own melodies. After all, anybody with musical knowledge knows that harmony relies on a mathematic base. While the future is waiting for them, the present cannot be more encouraging. With Bizarre, he has managed to perfectly assemble two vital organs: brain and heart.
